ST552 · Suspension Bridge

Instrumented suspension-bridge experiment on the ST500 digital frame

A scale suspension bridge whose roadway is divided into eleven load-bearing segments so that concentrated or distributed loads can be placed arbitrarily along the span. The roadway can be left flexible, as a pure catenary, or stiffened by two stainless-steel rods to approximate a rigid beam — letting students compare the two limiting structural behaviours side by side. Cable and support forces, together with the angle of the suspension cable at the pylons, are read by the ST501 supports on the ST500 frame and streamed in real time to the Sangari software.
ST552 — Forces on a suspension bridge
Experiments
  • Suspension-cable forces on the unloaded bridge
  • Suspension-cable and support forces on the loaded bridge
  • Dependence of support forces on the magnitude and position of the roadway load
  • Effect of a moving load — step the ST505 loads along the roadway
  • Comparison of a flexible (catenary) roadway with a rigid (stiffened) roadway
