ST553 · Parabolic Arch Bridge

Instrumented parabolic-arch bridge experiment on the ST500 digital frame

An arch bridge with a parabolic supporting arch beneath a flexible, eleven-segment roadway. One bridge bearing can be configured as fixed or as a floating roller — letting students measure both the reaction forces and the horizontal displacement of the roller directly with the ST503 distance gauge. Loads clip anywhere along the roadway, and the ST500 software computes the arch forces and support angles from the instrumented ST501 supports, giving a concrete picture of how a parabolic arch transmits roadway load into the abutments.
ST553 — Parabolic arch bridge
Experiments
  • Arch forces on the unloaded bridge
  • Arch and support forces on the loaded bridge
  • Dependence of support forces on the position and magnitude of the roadway load
  • Effect of a moving load — step the ST505 loads along the roadway
  • Horizontal displacement at the floating bearing — measured with ST503
  • Comparison of fixed / floating bearing configurations
